Dr. Sandra Anderson
Sandra Anderson’s career in education began at age eighteen followed by training three years later at Erdiston Teachers’ Training College. Her early passion for nurturing young lives laid the foundation for a lifelong academic journey, leading her to the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, where she earned a degree in Sociology and Education with Upper Second Class Honours.
Her commitment to excellence eventually took her to Perth, Australia. As a Commonwealth Scholar at Edith Cowan University, Sandra’s master’s studies evolved into a PhD in Early Childhood Studies. This period was personally significant for while navigating her doctoral research, she balanced life with her elder daughter and welcomed her second.
Upon returning to Barbados, her family was completed with the birth of her son—a testament to her ability to harmonize rigorous scholarship with a devoted family life.
Dr. Anderson’s professional influence spans borders. She spent three years as a commended lecturer at the University of Guyana before returning home to Barbados. For over four decades, she served the Ministry of Education with satisfaction, balancing primary school teaching by day with tutoring at Erdiston Teachers’ Training College by evening. She culminated her 42-year career in government service as a primary School Principal, retiring in 2021.
However, retirement has served as a "vibrant new beginning" rather than a conclusion. Guided by the philosophy, "To whom much is given, much is expected," Dr. Anderson has dedicated her expertise to community leadership. She currently serves as: Chair of the Board for the Caribbean Dyslexia Association/Centre and Advisor and Chair for Fresh start Academy. In these roles, she advocates for children with diverse learning needs, ensuring they receive the specialized support necessary to thrive.
Furthermore, she has come full circle by serving as a contract assessor for Erdiston Teachers’ Training College, mentoring the next generation of educators. Her recent appointment as a Justice of the Peace further cements her legacy of civic duty.
Outside of her professional and volunteer commitments, Sandra is an avid traveler and enjoys assembling 1,000-piece puzzles, painting canvas-by-numbers and maintaining her lifelong love of reading.
